Meet Your Inner Teams: From Survival to Soul

Have you ever felt like you’re doing all the right things — healing modalities, therapy, breathwork, yoga, meditating, journaling — trying so hard to release resistance but still finding yourself stuck in the same patterns, such as procrastination, perfectionism or people-pleasing?

Here’s the thing: the part of you that wants to heal isn’t the same part that’s holding the resistance.

Inside you lives an entire ecosystem of energies, beliefs and protective mechanisms. What I call your Inner Teams, made up of Inner Parts (AKA sub-personalities or ‘voices’). Some parts are on the frontline, trying to manage day-to-day life. Others are buried deep, holding emotional wounds. And still others are connected to your higher knowing, your purpose and your soul.

“Each of us is made up of many ‘Selves’ or sub-personalities. These Selves are the building blocks of your psyche. Each Self is an independent unit or personality.

Each of these Selves is like an actual person living inside of us. Each has its own history, its own way of looking at life, and each has its own way of living in the world.

How you will behave in any particular situation will depend upon the Self that is in charge at the moment.
Some of the Selves are fuelled by Love. Others are fuelled by Fear. With skill, you have the power to choose which Self will show up in any moment.”

~ Alan Davidson

In this post, I’d like to introduce you to the foundational structure of these inner teams. Let’s call it your Inner Boarding House.

(BTW I particularly love this metaphor since I spent five years in a real boarding house with 32 other teenage girls — each with their own moods, stories, strengths and shadows. It was a wild and formative lesson in personalities, power struggles and survival strategies. In many ways, it mirrored what I later discovered within myself, and what I now help others navigate: the rich, complex inner world of parts that are all trying to be seen, heard and harmonised.)

🏠 Your Inner Boarding House

Think of your inner world like a multi-storey house. Each level represents a different team of energies within you. When these parts are disconnected, out of sync, or stuck in survival mode, it’s particularly hard to feel clarity, ease or alignment.

Let’s take a tour:

Below is a visual representation of your Inner Boarding House:

Basement: Team Survival – Defense

These parts live deep below the surface, in “the basement”. Their job is to protect you from pain — at all costs.

Team Leader: Resistance. For example,

  • Inner Critic
  • Self-Doubt
  • The Saboteur
  • Wounded Selves
  • Emotional Defences

They’re often reactive, intense or shut down. These parts carry the weight of past pain and trauma. They’re not “bad” (like we often think), they’re just afraid, or still living from outdated beliefs shaped in early life. Some still behave the same as when you were a child, as if you are still 3 years old (for example).

Ground Floor: Team Human – Who’s In Charge?

This is where the parts live that try to “run your life.” They’re often the most visible and active.

  • Controller/Manager: Organises, plans, overfunctions, micromanages to stay in control – drawing heavily on the left hemisphere of the brain, which is structured, analytical and future-oriented.
  • Protector: Pulls you back, withdraws, distracts or avoids to keep you from emotional risk – often reacting from the reptilian brain, where primal responses like fight, flight, freeze and fawn originate.
  • Human Self: Your Sensing, Feeling, Thinking, Choosing and Spiritual Self. These include your right-brain functions such as emotional awareness, intuition and present-moment embodiment.

These parts are trying to help, but they’re usually using outdated tools and working from childhood conditioning.

Second Floor: Team Success – Thriving

These are the parts of you that long to live fully, love deeply, and create meaningfully. When allowed to lead, they bring vitality, direction and joy.

Team Leader: Charismatic Self

  • Joyful Self – positive emotions
  • Flowing Self – your natural strengths in action
  • Loving Self – healthy relationships
  • Purposeful Self – seeks meaning and purpose
  • Achieving Self – your ambitions and accomplishments

Often, these parts are underutilised because the basement team is too loud!

Penthouse: Team Soul – Enlightening

At the top of the house is your deepest truth. These are your soul-aligned aspects. When the rest of the house quiets down, you can access their guidance.

  • Genius / Daemon / Higher Self
  • Dharmic Self (what you came here to express)
  • Karmic Self (what you’re here to learn)
  • Soul Contracts
  • Soul Destiny

This is where you feel aligned, guided and deeply connected to your purpose.

💛 Integration: Bringing Your Inner Teams Into Harmony

Most people are run by Team Survival or Team Human—constantly pushing, avoiding, or spinning in old cycles.

In my work, we don’t try to get rid of these parts. We meet them with love, not force. Rather than pushing through fear, we make friends with it.

As I first experienced with one of my mentors, Fiona Orr, by friending the fear we seek to understand it, listen to it, and offer it support. We work gently with the sensations in the body, allowing the parts that are contracted in fear or pain to soften. As they feel seen, heard and no longer alone, the Controller and Protector naturally begin to loosen their grip. They no longer need to over-protect or over-perform.

At the same time, we begin to engage the right hemisphere of the brain, activating expansive states, creativity, and felt-sense awareness. These right-brain frequencies help re-pattern your system in a way that words alone cannot reach.

Through this synergy, your internal world starts to reorganise, with your Inner Teams working in harmony.
You shift from inner conflict to inner clarity.
From managing and surviving… to choosing, thriving and leading.

You begin living from your Soul’s wisdom, not your fear.

And you start making choices from alignment, ease and trust.
