Yoga & Meditation

Awaken & mobilise the spine, while balancing the nervous system.

I teach yoga that is based on a deep and sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology, modern medical science and traditional hatha yoga.

Using the unique Yoga Synergy style, incorporating asanas (poses and postures), vinyasa (dynamic exercises that combine movement with breath), pranayama (breath control) and meditation. It’s a dynamic moving meditation that links postures with breath.

This style of yoga helps to develop strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness, increase energy, and enhance the ability to deal with stress.

The practice is safe regardless of how fit you are. It is suitable for every body, whether you have an injury or have never tried yoga before. It is also a strong challenge for people used to a regular physical practice such as professional dancers, elite athletes and advanced yoga practitioners.

The next Fundamentals Course commences Monday 2 May 2022 and will go for 9 weeks.

This course teaches one sequence of static postures (Asanas) and dynamic exercises (Vinyasas) over a 9 week period. Learning a yoga sequence enables the practitioner to focus on the breathing (Pranayama) and meditative aspects of the practice.

The teaching is sequential and progressive, therefore it is important to come to every class if possible.

You are first introduced to the basic format of the sequence, with more exercises incorporated as the course progresses. You will receive lots of demonstration to begin with to help clarify the verbal instructions. Towards the end of the course there is little demonstration and adjustment, as emphasis is given to the flowing movements between the poses (Vinyasa), the breathing (Pranayama), internal muscular control (Bandha), the generation and flow of energy in the body (Mudra), and meditation (Dhyana).

Each pose (asana) or exercise has a simple/easy and a complex/hard version. There are also modified variations of a pose for people with injuries or medical conditions. Throughout the course you will be guided to choose the appropriate variation based on your experience, health situation and needs at the time.

Yin Yoga is a slower-paced, more meditative version of the popular physical and spiritual discipline of yoga.

In Yin yoga, the poses are held for a long period of time (typically three to five minutes or longer) to target the connective tissues (such as the ligaments) rather than focusing on the muscles. As a result, the asanas (postures) are more passive holds, with little muscular engagement.

Yoga is great for activating slow-twitch muscle fibres, which builds endurance. It’s fantastic for helping your body to cleanse itself, and also builds flexibility, balance and peacefulness.

But, even if the flow is faster, yoga simply doesn’t target your fast-twitch muscles, which you need for muscle definition, and gains in all-over strength. Yoga is a wonderful spiritual and movement discipline, but it is only a partial exercise form.

Yoga Shredwas developed by Sadie Nardini who took the general principles of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), identified the most efficient timing and which muscles to target, and then designed a safe  movement practice based on yoga alignment and western anatomy knowledge.
